NP401 Advanced Square Mechanics
Complicated
stories require advanced techniques, such a knitted squares, skewed
stories, tinted plots, and multiplied characters. NP401 provides the
tools necessary for analyzing, constructing and testing stories that go
beyond a simple, one square plot.
NP410 Biblical Typology and the New Poetics The Bible is amongst the most difficult of works to analyze archetypally. In a sense, it is pure archetype: all of the different heroes are types or aspects of Christ, and all of the female heroines are images of Mary or of the Church. On the other hand, because the Bible relies on reality, on the mind of God, rather than the invention of men, it includes complexities that are not easily resolved. NP410 is a preliminary essay in penetrating the great Book's archetypal meanings. NP420 Applications of the New Poetics for Writers An understanding of archetypal theory can be a great boon to a writer: it can polish, sharpen, and add impact to literary work. On the other hand, if ill-employed, it can produce works that are stunted, predictable, and uninspired. NP420 shows how to use these tools successfully, navigating between the Scylla of over-reliance and legalism, and the Charybdis of innovation and false originality.
